David & Goliath

Power Point to follow along I first heard a sermon about David and Goliath when I was still in high school. It was by Charles Swindoll. He wrote a beautiful book about it as well. I preached this sermon over 20 times during my wife, including in Bay City and El Campo. Each time, I would put my suit jacket on a young child to illustrate how crazy it is to use the normal tools of the trade (Saul's armor for a shepherd boy). Research Charles Swindoll's version preached during Covid. Sermon

Restoration in 19th Century America

Efforts to restore an earlier, purer form of Christianity are frequently a response to  denominationalism . As  Rubel Shelly  put it, "the motive behind all restoration movements is to tear down the walls of separation by a return to the practice of the original, essential and universal features of the Christian religion." 1500 to 1800 Europe, Going to America, and the English version of the Bible

Powerpoint May 12   Images of the Bishops Bible   As we begin to look at Christianity going to America, let's wrap up the Reformation in Europe with an emphasis on what happened in England. England was a power house. There were breakaway groups from the Catholic church and Lutheranism was gaining popularity in the mid to late 1500s.  By 1600 it was on equal ground in some European communities as Roman Catholism. It is important to note how the Bible went from only the priest being able to read it to every home having a copy. List translations here. Powerpoint                                                               Notes Key Passage: 1 Timothy 4   1  The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 2  Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. 3   They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. 4  For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5  because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. 6  If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on t...

Sacraments - April 28, 2024

Sacraments Powerpoint In our study we see how man has taken the simplicity of the New Testament church and complicated it for man's own benefit.  Pagan and Greek influence, along with a strong coalition of Jews wanting to return Christianity to the Jewish ways, has taken the concept of the church into a complicated organization. Church leaders gave themselves power and the common Christian was led to believe they had to depend on priests and bishops to plead to God for their forgiveness. I Peter 2:9 is our key verse: B ut you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. God made all Christians priests in HIs New Covenant.
