Sunday, May 10, 2026 Praying the Proverbs - Mother's Day

Good Morning and Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms.  Today, we will jump ahead to Proverbs 31 so we can read a little about a good mom.

Proverbs 31:1-3

The sayings of King Lemuel—an inspired utterance his mother taught him.

Listen, my son! Listen, son of my womb!
Listen, my son, the answer to my prayers!
Do not spend your strength on women,
your vigor on those who ruin kings....

This famous proverb is attributed to King Lemuel, though there is no historical record of a king by that name. According to ancient Jewish tradition, some believe Lemuel may have been King Solomon or possibly King Hezekiah. If Solomon is the author, many Jewish scholars believe the mother mentioned in the passage was Bathsheba.

When we consider Bathsheba’s life and all that history tells us about her story, her words to Lemuel carry even greater weight and meaning. Her lessons are shaped by both personal failure and God’s redeeming grace.

The proverb highlights three major themes:

  • Advice to kings
  • The virtuous woman
  • The central message of Proverbs

It reminds readers that beauty and charm are temporary, while a person who fears and serves the Lord is truly worthy of praise.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate. (verses 30-31)

Let's pray this Sunday morning and ask God to bless and honor the women who live by God's standards.

“Lord, thank You for the beautiful example of wisdom, strength, diligence, and kindness found in Proverbs 31. Thank You for women You have put in my life to keep me from sin.  For the wives, grandmothers and mothers who have influenced our lives, we thank You and pray Your bountiful blessings

Help me to live with a faithful heart and to serve others with love and grace. Teach me to speak with wisdom, work with integrity, and care for those around me with compassion. May my life reflect trust in You more than concern for outward appearance or worldly praise. Clothe me with strength and dignity, and help me walk confidently in Your purpose each day. Let my home, my words, and my actions honor You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
