Prayer Starter - Friday, June 27, 2025 Praying in Despair
Christian minister and author Lynn Anderson wrote about a group of church leaders discussing prayer. One said, "I hate to admit it, but sometimes my schedule gets so hectic I don't really pray much for days."
Another said, "My problem is a bit different, I usually pray fairly regularly, but my prayers often feel stale and I get into this rut praying the same old things every day."
A third man spoke up adding, "I hear that. Rote, stale, and repetitive. Plus my prayers become narrower and narrower. Here lately I pray mostly about me: my needs, my family, and my work. Me!"
Prayer Warrior, these struggles are not unique. Around the world sincere Christians find themselves stuck in a similar rut.
* Stale and shallow prayers
* Praying mostly about surface issues
* Prayer focused on us rather than on our relationship with God
We could go on and on. I hope these prayer starters help you avoid these ruts.
This morning focus on praying when life has us down.
The Psalms can be helpful in teaching us to pray. We tend to pray only the happy thoughts, but God wants us to communicate with Him about all of our life. Life is not always upbeat. We can learn from the Psalms how to pray deep from the bottom of our soul. Check out a sample from Psalm 88.
O Lord, God of my salvation,
I have cried out day and night before You.
Let my prayer come before You;
Incline Your ear to my cry.
Holy Father in Heaven,
The 88th Psalm is dark. We read it and don't see the hope, but life is like that. We need to really lean on You to see light. So often we cry out to You every morning and we feel despair. However, I am learning that I need passages and songs like this one to teach me to trust You. This morning we pray that You will listen to us and hear our prayers.
Because of Jesus,
Amen
