Good morning, Prayer Warriors!

Our scripture this morning is from I Chronicles, 17:16-17 (NIV)

16 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said:

“Who am I, Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? 17 And as if this were not enough in your sight, my God, you have spoken about the future of the house of your servant. You, Lord God, have looked on me as though I were the most exalted of men.

This passage of scripture was the passage John Newton was preaching when he famously wrote the popular hymn, Amazing Grace,  in 1772.

The Story of “Amazing Grace”

“Amazing Grace” is one of the most beloved hymns in the world, known for its powerful message of redemption and hope. The hymn was written in 1772 by John Newton, a man whose life journey was a dramatic story of transformation.

Born in England in 1725. As a young man, John Newton lived a reckless life and eventually became involved in the Atlantic slave trade, working on and later commanding slave ships. His heart was hardened, and his actions reflected a life far from God.

But everything began to change during a violent storm at sea in 1748. As the ship he was on was battered by waves and near sinking, Newton cried out to God for mercy. That moment marked the beginning of a deep spiritual awakening. Over time, he left the slave trade completely, later becoming a Christian minister.

Years after his conversion, Newton reflected on the grace that had saved him. He knew he had been blind, both spiritually and morally, and had been rescued by the mercy of God. In 1772, as part of a New Year’s Day sermon, he wrote the words that would become “Amazing Grace.” The original title was “Faith’s Review and Expectation.”

The hymn begins with the famous line: “Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me.” These words were deeply personal to Newton, who never forgot the weight of his past sins and the overwhelming mercy that changed his life.

The melody most associated with the hymn today was added decades later in America. It was set to a tune called “New Britain” and published in a shape-note hymnal in 1835. Since then, “Amazing Grace” has been sung across continents, cultures, and generations, offering hope to the lost and comfort to the brokenhearted.

Dear God, our Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Amazing grace. You reached down to us and saved us by Your grace. How sweet is the sound of those words.

Lord, I often feel like David and wonder why You would be so gracious to me, that You would send Your Son to take responsibility for my sins. Forgive me for the wrongs I have committed. Forgive me for not giving You my all. Help me to walk in the steps of Jesus.

Help me to share Your Amazing Grace with others.  In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

Amazing Grace
