Psalm 37:23 NCV Other versions
The following is my summary from a book by Chad Bird Untamed Prayers: 365 Daily Devotions on Christ in the Book of Psalms.
Most Bibles say Psalm 37:23 like this: “The steps of a man are established by the LORD.” That’s a good translation, but in the original Hebrew language, the words are in a different order. It really says, “By the LORD the steps of a man are established.”
That small change helps us focus on the most important part: “By the LORD.”
By the LORD, we start our day. We get out of bed, maybe grab something to eat or drink, and think about what God wants us to do that day. Maybe it’s helping at home, being kind to a friend, or doing our best at school or work. Maybe it’s praying for someone who needs help.
By the LORD, we walk into each new day—the day God has made for us. Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it!”
But by the LORD, we also walk through hard days. Days when we have to go to the hospital because someone we love is sick. Days when families are hurting or going through big changes. Days when we visit a grave and feel very sad.
Even on those tough days, we keep going—sometimes walking, sometimes limping, and sometimes just barely moving forward. But we don’t go alone. Jesus is always with us—not just on happy days, but on the hard days too.
By the Lord, I pray this morning, lifting up Your Name, O' Lord! Thank You for giving me life and giving me a full life in Jesus. Father, whether my life is flying high or I am struggling with daily tasks, I know You are with me.
Dear God, please help me always walk with Your Spirit and not trail off. By the Lord, help me to be Your servant day in and day out. When my life is hurting, help me to turn to You. Remind me O, Lord, the You are with me all times.
In Jesus Name, Amen.
