Choosing "What Truly Matters” — A Black Friday Reflection

Black Friday is known for long lines, early mornings, and the hunt for the best deal. Many people rush from store to store, hoping to grab something valuable before it’s gone. But as followers of Christ, days like this should whisper a deeper spiritual reminder.

Jesus once said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). On a day centered on buying, this verse invites us to pause and reflect: What do I treasure most? Is it the temporary excitement of a purchase, or the lasting peace that comes from walking closely with God?

Black Friday can remind us of how quickly we chase after what fades, how easily we value what won’t last, and how often we believe the myth that “just one more thing” will finally satisfy us. Yet Christ gently calls us to a better way—one where our hearts rest not in bargains, but in blessings… not in possessions, but in His presence.

As you see crowds rushing and carts filling, let it spark gratitude instead of greed. Let it remind you that in Christ, you already have the greatest gift ever offered — the gift that could never be discounted, duplicated, or replaced.

Today, let’s also choose what truly matters: a thankful heart, a generous spirit, and a treasure that no sale can offer—a life anchored in Jesus.


Heavenly Father,

On this busy day when so many are searching for the best deals, help me search for You first. Guard my heart from being distracted by things that won’t last, and remind me that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand.

Give me wisdom as I make choices, patience when the crowds feel overwhelming, and a spirit of gratitude in every moment. Let my heart stay anchored in what truly matters: Your presence, Your peace, and Your purpose for my life.

Today, help me shine Your light with kindness, generosity, and joy. May everything I do point back to You, the greatest gift I could ever receive.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer Starter - Thursday, June 26, 2025 Pray for a Helicopter

Good Morning, I hope you won't be offended, but I want to share an old joke with you that drives home an important point regarding what the Bible tells us about prayer and trusting in God. A religious man was trapped on the roof of his house during a bad flood. He prayed to God to save him. Before the waters were too high, a neighbor drove by and offered to take him in his truck before the water rose. He declined the offer and said "God will save me."  As the water rose, vehicles could no longer drive by and a Fire & Rescue crew came by in a boat. Again, an offer for rescue and again, the religious man said, he would wait upon the Lord.  Finally the water is destroying the house and it is near the lower levels of the roof. Another rescue attempt this time by helicopter, offers to whisk him away to safely and he declines, relying on God to save him, only to die in the great storm. It's Friday - Game Day.  Friday Night Lights For many of us, Friday night lights bring back memories of gathering with family and friends at the local football field. The lights shining against the night sky signaled more than just a game—it was a place of community, excitement, and hope. In life, we also walk through nights that feel dark. The worries of health, family, or the unknown can weigh heavily. But just as stadium lights brighten the field, the light of Christ shines into our lives. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” ( John 8:12 ). Dear Heavenly Father, many of us are long past the days of Friday night lights; others of us, have a game tonight. Be with us as we are a community - we are family.
