Prayer Starter - Tuesday, March 17, 2026 Three Psalms of God’s Presence, Even in Uncertainty (Ps. 87-89)

This morning I want to wrap up this section of Psalms that has focused on "Faith Tested."  As you can recall, the writer prays for God to hear him and he prays songs of praise, but then also shares his insecurity and struggle to be faithful.  Psalms 87-89 are no different.  These psalms take us from hope to hardship and then to trust. The 87th Psalm celebrates the city of God, painting a picture of a place where God welcomes all nations of people. This reminds us that our God is inclusive and wants all to be saved.

Psalm 88 shifts to one of the most honest and difficult prayers in the Psalms. It is a cry from deep pain, where the writer feels alone and surrounded by darkness. There is no easy resolution, but the psalm shows us that even in our lowest moments, we can still bring our pain to God.

The 89th Psalm reminds us that God's faithfulness is not based on our situation, but  His faithfulness is Who He is. God keeps His Word.

You can actually pray the 88th Psalm:

Lord, you are the God who saves me;
    day and night I cry out to you.
May my prayer come before you;
    turn your ear to my cry.

The prayer continues but it is a prayer of sadness.

If you are in a joyful mode, turn to the next Psalm, 89 as it is one of joyful trust in the Lord.

I will sing of the Lord’s great love forever;
    with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known
    through all generations.

I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
    that you have established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
    I have sworn to David my servant,

‘I will establish your line forever
    and make your throne firm through all generations.’”

The heavens praise your wonders, Lord,
    your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.

For who in the skies above can compare with the Lord?
    Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings?

In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
    he is more awesome than all who surround him.

Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?
    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

You rule over the surging sea;
    when its waves mount up, you still them.

You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;
    with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.

The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;
    you founded the world and all that is in it.

You created the north and the south;
    Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.

Your arm is endowed with power;
    your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    love and faithfulness go before you.

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
    who walk in the light of your presence, Lord.

They rejoice in your name all day long;
    they celebrate your righteousness.

For you are their glory and strength,
    and by your favor you exalt our horn.

Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord,
    our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Oh, Lord, Our God Almighty, whether we are struggling in our faith or we are walking tall because of Your love, we lift Your Name on high!

Thank You for being our God, our Savior, Our Lord.  You created the north and the south, the east and the west; You are the creator of all.  This morning, I ask You to send Your Spirit to all my friends praying this prayer with me. May righteousness and justice find them  May the rejoice in Your Name all day long and celebrate Your faithfulness.

Please continue your personal prayer to God.
In the Name of You Son, I pray. Amen
