Friday, May 22, 2026 Pray for Humility before Our God (Proverbs 30:1–17)
Good Morning, Friends:
Today we will split Proverbs 30 and focus on the first 17 verses. The passage was written by Agur, who we know little about. Agur, whose name means “collector” or “gatherer,” is introduced in Proverbs 30 as a humble seeker of wisdom. His father’s name, Jakeh, means “pious” or “obedient.” Agur openly admits his human limitations and stands in awe of God’s greatness, making humility one of the central themes of his writings. While some traditions connect him to King Solomon, most scholars believe he was an independent wise man, possibly from outside Israel. Proverbs 30 is known for Agur’s memorable numerical sayings and his balanced prayer asking for neither poverty nor riches, but daily dependence on God.
“Every word of God is flawless;
he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Do not add to his words,
or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
7 “Two things I ask of you, Lord;
do not refuse me before I die:
8 Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
9 Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God. - Proverbs 30:5-9
Join me in this short prayer based on this passage:
Father, keep my heart humble and teachable. Help me trust Your Word above my own understanding. Guard me from pride, selfishness, and selfish ambushion that is never satisfied. Teach me to honor You and respect others in the way I live each day. Through the Name of Your Son, Amen.
What a wondeful prayer for our graduates. Today is graduation day for most school districts in Texas. As you continue to pray your personal prayer, remember the graduates across the state. Have a great day!
